What To Know Before Choosing a Deburring Method

Posted by Bill Wright on

mr deburrIn industrial settings, there are a lot of variants at play that can change the outcome of the piece that is being made. Something like the pH of mass finishing solutions can vary from one to 14. But there are also more serious problems that need to be addressed before a metal piece is shipped to the customer. Burrs on metal parts need to be removed during the manufacturing process and this article is going to explore a few common deburring methods.

What Exactly Is a Burr?

A burr found on a metal piece is an imperfection, like an edge or a seam, that results from common manufacturing methods such as welding and grinding. Not only do burrs make the product look bad, but they can also have a big impact on how the finished product functions, which can reduce quality and even be a safety hazard. There are actually five common classes of burrs. From classes one to two, burrs are very small and can often be removed easily. Class three burrs are also small, but require more extensive use of finishing tools to be removed. And class four and five burrs are quite large, have a strong attachment to the metal, and require a lot of effort and the use of deburring machines, like a Mr Deburr, to remove.

Options for Deburring

Fortunately, there are several ways burrs of all sizes and shapes can be removed. Some common methods include deburring manually using special tools, burning the burrs in a combustion chamber, and using an electrical current to remove burrs in places that may be hard to reach.

But one of the most popular deburring methods is using vibratory finishing equipment. A vibratory finishing machine, like a Mr Deburr, is often a lot less aggressive than other deburring methods. These machines consist of a rotating barrel or bowl with some sort of abrasive material. When the object with the burr is placed in the machine, it rotates and rubs along the abrasive material, effectively removing any imperfections, including burrs. This method is cost-effective, produces standard finishes, and inflicts less wear on the metal piece.

As you can see, deburring is important to ensure metal pieces are free of imperfections. And using the right deburring method and machine can make a big difference in quality.
