The Importance of U.S. Manufacturing

The U.S. manufacturing sector is the largest in the entire world, responsible for producing 18.2% of the goods represented across the world. Vibratory finishing machines, electronics, food processing equipment, and many more industries rely on manufacturing. As of 2017, the U.S. manufacturing industry employed 12.4 million people, generating nominal gross domestic product (GDP) of $2.2 trillion.

The U.S. had as many people working in the manufacturing sector as it did 69 years ago -- and that's not a bad thing.

"Now, if you give us an opportunity to export more to China, bring those tariff walls down, bring those barriers down, if they give it to us, we will benefit, our trade gap will narrow, our exports will create jobs everywhere, including good-paying and, you know, hard-hat manufacturing blue-collar jobs," said Larry Kudlow, director of the White House National Economic Council.

This is an incredibly versatile industry, as well. Manufacturing is responsible for everything from vibratory finishing machines for deburring to automotive parts.

Here are some of the main benefits of manufacturing in the United States:

  • More American jobs -- Manufacturing will always be an essential industry, resulting in the need for constant employment growth. The industry has added 1.1 million jobs since 2008's Great Recession and manufacturers reported an additional 2% growth throughout 2018.
  • Reduced transport costs -- The logistical expenses involved with transporting products, materials, and other components around the world can be quite costly. Keeping manufacturing in house, however, will lead to major savings on both inbound and outbound deliveries, as well as essentially eliminating shipping costs.
  • Environmental advantages -- U.S. manufacturing also enjoys plenty of eco-friendly benefits, as well. Ocean transport is one of the biggest emitters of greenhouse gases. Organizations working with U.S. manufacturers instead of companies abroad will produce a much smaller carbon footprint.
  • High safety standards -- Though efficiency remains a top priority, nothing is higher on U.S. manufacturer's priority lists than safety and quality control. U.S. manufacturing enables the enforcement of greater safety practices for facilities across the county in order to help protect workers and nearby civilians.
